Conceived by Nicola Spinosa with the collaboration of the Soprintendenza BAPSAE di Caserta e Benevento, this exhibition celebrated the lively and innovative cultural activity that was created around the renowned architect Luigi Vanvitelli. It included exhibits from Italian and foreign institutions and some of the Royal Palace’s permanent furnishings, around sixty pictures painted for Neapolitan churches and noble palaces, and allegorical table centrepieces of the reigning dynasty. Official portraits of members of the Royal Family and of eminent aristocrats closely connected to the Borbone Court complemented the display. The exhibition was set in the Royal Apartments of the Palace, which is accessed via the imposing monumental staircase. Due to the fragile materials and enormous sizes, some of the works, such as the great tapestries from the Quirinale and the heavy marble statues from the Museum of San Martino, required complex packing and handling.
